Joan Hyman teaches and practices yoga across the globe and locally with many popular vinyasa flow classes in Los Angeles. She has been teaching for twenty years and began teaching dance and fitness in her hometown of Philadelphia. After earning her Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science from Temple University, she moved to New York City to pursue a dance career. Here she was introduced to yoga at NY’s famous JivaMulkti and Om, this was the beginning of a lifestyle change.
She began teaching yoga for fun and moved to Las Vegas for one year to perform in a show. Here she continued her practice and also began to take teaching yoga more seriously. She moved to Santa Monica Ca. in 2002 and completed the YogaWorks Teacher Training under the watchful eye of Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford. She started practicing ashtanga yoga under Maty Ezraty whom she later assisted and mentored.
Her love for flow didn’t stop and she mentored under “Vinyasa Flow Queen” Annie Carpenter. She received her YogaWorks Certification in 2006 and took her first trip to Mysore, India to study with the beloved Sri K. Pattihbi Jois and his grandson Sharath. She traveled to Sri Lanka after 2 months of study in mysore and met Prem Carlisie and Heather Duplex who also offered teachings on meditation, pranayama, and ayurveda whom she most recently visited at their retreat center in Ubud, Bali this past year.
She continues to practice ashtanga daily under certified and authorized teachers including Tim Miller and Noah Williams and continues to grow in her teachings by following her heart’s intention and opens herself up to experiences that help her evolve in her own life. Her classes are fun, upbeat, and always evolving. She draws attention to the breath and alignment, adding vinyasa to heat and cleanse the body. Her sequences are safe and effective and well thought out. Her blend of lightness mixed with a strong level of intensity is open to all levels and can help anyone move deeper in their practice.
Her others interest include ayurveda (the science of life), chakras, meditation, and cooking healthy vegetarian food. She also loves to travel around the world and learn about other cultures and people. “I’ve been teaching most of my life and comes from an organic intuitive place. To be able to do what I love and stay deeply connected to my yoga practice is a truly a blessing which I hope I can pass onto others. Namaste!”
